Il y a 35 ans ce samedi (20 mai 1988), Van Halen sortait son huitième album – et le deuxième avec Sammy Hagar – OU812, qui a figuré pendant quatre semaines en tête des hit-parades.
L’album comprend quatre singles classés dans le Top 40 du Billboard Hot 100, le Top 5 “When It’s Love” (#1 Mainstream Rock Tracks), “Black And Blue” (#34), “Finish What Ya Started (#13 ; #2 Mainstream Rock Tracks), et “Feels So Good” (#35). À ce jour, OU812 s’est vendu à plus de quatre millions d’exemplaires rien qu’aux États-Unis.
Lors de la promotion de OU812, feu le grand Eddie Van Halen et Sammy Hagar ont parlé franchement de ce que l’autre avait offert au groupe : [“(Eddie Van Halen): This guy has such a range, I mean, he can sing anything. Y’know, it all just opens up a whole new dimension. (Sammy Hagar): We all inspire each other, seriously. Y’know, the same with me — I’ve never been with musicians that played like this, and so I start sayin’, ‘Wo! I can do this now’ — or somethin’ that’s been inside that you could never quite — an idea you couldn’t quite get out because you don’t bring a certain idea to a band that people can’t understand or play.
